For thousands of years, wars were fought between nations. That is to say,
the belligerent powers were the governments of countries. For thousands
of years those wars generally had reasonably well defined ‘front lines’
that moved based on the fortunes of battle. In Vietnam war was still between
governments but there were no longer well defined ‘front lines’ in
the manner of, for example, WW II.

Today we are engaged in a global war on Islamic terror and it is not primarily
a war between the governments of nations but rather a clash of
cultures and religion. While there are concentrations of violence and hostilities
in parts of Iraq and Afghanistan, it is not technically correct to say
the United States is at war with the governments of those nations. As a
tactical necessity our armed forces did destroy and replace the governments
of those two nations. We displaced the Taliban in Afghanistan and
we overthrew the Baathist regime of Saddam Hussein in Iraq.
However, if the global war on terror had been a war between governments,
it would have been over several years ago and we would have
achieved a total victory. The reality is, the war continues and probably
will continue for many more years. We have not been fighting to change
the governments of these two countries, although doing so was a tactical
requirement of a much larger goal - the destruction of Islamists ability to
carry on jihad against the United States and Israel. This is a war against
the ideology of Islam and the battlefields of that war encompass the
whole of the earth including your town and your neighborhood.

That is a frightening thing to understand. We are in a war with an ideology
so evil that it is determined to conquer the entire world and force, at
the point of a sword, every tongue to confess that there is one God, his
name is Allah, and Mohammed is his Prophet. Like it or not, you are a
combatant in this war against our way of life. There are two ways you
and I together will defeat this evil. First we will continue to live our lives
as free people.

In Chapter Two I cover some of the things that define us as the freest
nation in the history of the world. Americans living well is the best revenge;
unfortunately, it is also the raison d être for al-Qaeda and all the
other tentacles of Islam to despise us enough to commit suicide and murder
innocent noncombatants.

We are doing more than just living free. Americans have always been, on
the whole, generous, caring, altruistic, idealistic, charitable, optimistic,
and generally willing to offer a helping hand to the less fortunate. We are
joiners, organizers, volunteers, missionaries, activists, civic minded, caring
and compassionate. This nation was born out of a revolution that
started in our Churches. Before there were Minutemen in our fields or tea
-partying tax rebels at Boston’s harbor, there were fire breathing Pastors
in our pulpits who decried injustice thereby inciting men of good conscience
to action. Through our history our laws have been enforced by a
posse, our shores defended by Rough Riders, and our way of life has
grown, developed and been defended in thousands of churches, civic associations,
fraternal organizations, social clubs, volunteer fire departments
and of course our many volunteer militias in each state.

Ronald Reagan was both a great communicator and a great leader because
he understood and personified the American spirit of optimism, and
our can-do attitude. Today that can-do spirit is reflected in these volunteer
institutions, efforts, organizations, social and political movements.
Some are our traditional efforts to assist our fellow man that have been a
part of the American experiment in self government since before the
American Revolution. Other activities are specifically designed to defend
America and our way of life from Islamic fascism. We will look at a few
of each type in some detail in order to better understand the nature of this
war and the crucial role played in this conflict by American volunteers
here on the homeland front.

We will also examine why we are at great risk and what can and must be
done about it - often once again by civilian volunteers. Now that our nation
has been first invaded by illegal aliens and then attacked by Islamic
jihadists.
